Harry_Poulos Prof. Harry Poulos

Harry Poulos joined the Department of Civil Engineering at Sydney University in 1965, and was appointed a Professor in 1982, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. In 1989, he joined the consulting firm of Coffey Partners International, and is currently a Senior Principal with Coffey Geotechnics. He is also an Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney, and an Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has been involved in a large number of major projects in Australia and overseas, including high-rise building projects in Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and Qatar. He was selected as the Australian Civil Engineer of the Year for 2003 by the Institution of Engineers Australia, and as the inaugural Geotechnical Practitioner of the Year in 2004. He was the 1989 Rankine Lecturer, and the 2004 Terzaghi Lecturer.

Rudolph P. Frizzi has over 22 years of geotechnical engineering and project management experience with particular emphasis on foundations for arenas and high-rise structures in urban areas, embankment stability and large-scale land development on projects throughout the United States and overseas. He regularly prepares technical papers, and presents at technical lectures and seminars. His deep foundation expertise includes investigation, design, and construction of very high capacity drilled foundations (including shafts stabilised utilising both polymer and mineral slurries), augered cast-in-place piles and full-scale field load testing of these elements using the Osterberg Cell (O -Cell), Statnamic, and conventional static top-load testing. Rudolph has provided expert geotechnical consultation and testimony on excavation and foundation cases. He is currently a Senior Principal at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services and is also the current President of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) in the USA.

Dr. Bengt H. Fellenius, formerly Professor of Civil Engineering at the University Of Ottawa, is an internationally recognized foundation engineering consultant and the author of more than 250 technical papers. His professional experience comes from a wide variety of assignments that encompass foundation design for industrial plants, water and sewage treatment facilities, bridges and highway projects, marine structures, and urban area development, as well as participation in special investigations, instrumented field tests, etc. Dr.Fellenius has given lectures and courses to several universities and international conferences throughout America, Europe, and South-East Asia. He currently lives in Calgary, Canada.

John A. Hayes graduated from Queens University, Kingston with a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He continued post graduate studies in soil mechanics in London, England where he obtained his D.I.C. from Imperial College in 1962. He has more than 40 years of geotechnical engineering consulting experience acquired in Canada, Africa and the United States. John's early career was with H.G. Acres and R.M. Hardy Associates, engaged in the foundation design of earth dams, harbor facilities, multi-story buildings and railway roadbeds. He has been the president of Loadtest, Inc. since its formation in 1991.

Professor Kenji Ishihara took up the position of Professor of Civil Engineering in 1977 at the University of Tokyo and served there over the 40 years. He moved to the Tokyo University of Science and served as Professor from 1995 to 2001. During these period, he was active in the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFE). He was particularly effective in advancing the work of Technical Committee TC4 - Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering. His work with ISSMFE culminated in his appointment as President of the Society for the term 1997-2001. Professor Ishihara is currently a professor at Chuo University, Tokyo, Japan, and working as a consultant and lecturing widely throughout the world. His work has focused on dynamic pore pressure and liquefaction, soil-structure interaction, slope stability and earth structures. Much of his work is based on field evidence and the assessment of real problems of soil behaviour during earthquakes.

Prof. Richard Jardine

Professor Richard Jardine is Professor of Geomechanics at Imperial College London and Associate of the Geotechnical Consulting Group. Professor Jardine is active in research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and has managed several large international joint industry research projects. He has written over 150 academic papers, is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and has given keynote lectures at several recent international conferences. He has consulted widely on offshore and onshore projects and is a member of the API/ISO committee on offshore foundations.

Lee Prof. Wei Lee

Dr. Lee is currently the associate research professor of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). Before joined the NTUST, He has worked as a research fellow in Engineering Technology Division of Taiwan Construction Research Institute (TCRI) for over eight years since 2000. In year 2003 to 2008, he has acted as the research leader of TCRI. He was in charge of over 30 research projects per year. He is also the pioneer researcher in Taiwan for maintenance engineering of highway facilities. He has been the principal investigator or project manager for over forty highway and subway related research projects including hazard mitigation, seismic design of foundation and liquefaction mitigation, slope management system, and bridge maintenance related testing and inspection system. Dr. Lee has published over 70 conference paper and journal papers. He has also been in charge of over 60 governmental research and forensic investigation reports. Dr. Lee is a recipient of following awards: 2004, Prix R.M. Quigley Award, The Canadian Geotechnical Society, 2001, Taiwan Representative of 4th Asia Young Geotechnical Engineer Conference,1999, North American Geosynthetics Society Student Paper Competition Finalist, Geosynthetics’99 Conference, Boston. 1999, North American Geosynthetics Society Award of Excellence Finalist, Geosynthetics’99 Conference, Boston. Dr. Lee is the youngest board member of Taiwan Geotechnical Society, and was the youngest advisory board member of Chinese Geosynthetics Association for over five years.

Za-Chieh Moh holds a B.C. from National Taiwan University, and M.S. from Iowa State University, USA, a Sc.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary D. Tech. from Asian Institute of Technology.

He has previously worked as Assistant Professor at Yale University (1961-64), Associate Professor (1965-67), Professor (1967-76), Vice President & Provost (1974-76) at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok and President, Moh and Associates Group, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Beijing and Shanghai (1976-2007). Za- Chieh Moh has held numerous positions on boards and societies including President (1967-72) and Council Member (1972-present), Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society, Vice President (1973-74) and Board Member (1989-93), International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Hon. Treasurer-General, The Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (1987- 2000), President, Taipei Association of Professional Civil Engineers (1980-86), President, Chinese Association of Engineering Consultants, Taipei (1995-97) and President, Taipei Federation of Engineering Consultants (2001-2003).

Za-Chieh Moh is also a past recipient of many prestigious awards such as the “Gold Medal Award for Academic Achievement”, Chinese Institute of Civil & Hydraulic Engineering, “Man of the Year” Award, China Road Federation, and is listed in Marquis’ Who's Who in Science & Engineering (2003), Marquis Who's Who in the World (1986), American Men & Women of Science, Who’s Who in Engineering USA (1992), Who’s Who in Hong Kong (1997)

Dr Yet is presently working as Senior Executive Geotechnical Specialist with Building and Construction Authority, which overseas and administers the regulatory framework on building structure safety in Singapore. He has more than 15 years of experience in the geotechnical engineering field, in particularly on foundation engineering and earth retaining structures. He has published several papers in international conferences and journals, and has conducted seminars related to foundation engineering. He obtained his B.Eng (Civil) with 1st class Honours from University of Malaya in 1991. His research work on piled foundation at National University of Singapore has also earned him a PhD degree in 1998. He is a both a registered professional engineer in Singapore and Malaysia. He is also a registered Specialist Professional Engineer and a Specialist Accredited Checker in geotechnical engineering in Singapore.

Prof. Ing Hieng Wong

A principal consultant with Mitic Associates since early 1998, Dr. Wong is a registered professional engineer with over thirty nine years of experience in the field of geotechnical and civil engineering. He obtained a BSc degree in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours at Imperial College, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in geotechnical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Wong was head of the geotechnical services department at Ebasco Services Inc in New York and project manager and technical consultant at Dames and Moore in New Jersey, and also an Adjunct Professor in Civil Engineering at Columbia University and at Polytechnic University, both in New York. Dr Wong has been geotechnical consultant on a large number of projects involving deep excavations, underpinning of old buildings, highways, mass rapid transit, wharves, waterfront structures, high-rise buildings, refineries, tank farms, power plants, dams, wastewater treatment plants and ocean outfalls. A noteworthy project Dr Wong was the geotechnical project manager on is the Raffles City Complex in Singapore where all the high-rise towers, including the 73-storey building, are founded on rafts and where the hydrostatic uplift problem at the base of the three-level basement was solved with the adoption of a permanent under-drain system. Dr Wong is a Year 2000 winner of the Thomas A Middlebrooks Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Dr. Andy Pickles studied engineering at the University of Cambridge and later obtained a doctorate in geotechnical engineering from City University in London studying the field performance of embankments on soft ground. After working for a firm of international consultants in the UK, where he was the head of foundation engineering, he came out to Hong Kong in 1995 to work as Geotechnical Manager for construction of the new airport. In 1998 he became one of the founding directors of the Geotechnical Consulting Group (Asia) where the majority of his work has been associated with major infrastructure projects mainly involving deep excavations, piling and reclamation related work. In addition, he has acted as an expert witness on geotechnical matters on a number of mediations and arbitrations involving deep foundations.

Arthur So has over 27 years experience, mainly with contractors involving foundation, basement, and site formation. At present he is the Senior Project Manager at Chun Wo Foundations Limited responsible for the operations of the foundation projects. Major project in charge prior to joining is a complicated foundation and podium project at and above railway tracks at Fo Tan Station. This involves very careful planning and liasing with the Consultants, Clients, government and KCRC to ensure safe construction. He is also a part-time PhD student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research topic is “Observed Behaviours and Predictions of Long Driven H-Piles in Granitic Saprolites".

Dr. Sanjay Rana is a geophysicist working in the field of engineering geophysics for last 18 years. Dr Rana graduated in 1990 from University of Roorkee, now IIT Roorkee, with a M.Tech (Applied Geophysics) as a Gold Medalist. Dr Rana started his career with UP State Government and carried out extensive well logging operations including radio active loggings. He also worked briefly as Scientist C with the Department of Atomic Energy. Dr Rana started working in the field of engineering geophysics in 1995. He has been instrumental in starting full-fledged operations in the private sector, providing services like seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar, electrical tomography, seismic tomography etc. Dr Rana regularly trains geophysicists on the latest techniques employed by various departments and organisations. He has been instrumental in bringing various technology to India including Ground Penetrating Radar, High Resolution Tomography and Passive Seismic Tomography.

IanMCFeet Dr. Ian McFeat-Smith

Ir Dr Ian McFeat-Smith is a qualified engineering geologist, mining and civil engineer. He has researched the field performance of roadheaders and TBMs; worked on the construction of the Kielder Water Scheme in UK on quality site investigations, TBM applications for 34kms of tunnels and risk sharing contracts; and with Charles K. Haswell on the development of the Hong Kong MTR. For the last 30 years he has worked on 70 tunnel projects around S.E.Asia being responsible for the introduction of modern tunnelling techniques for a wide range of underground projects.

As the proprietor of IMS Tunnel Consultancy he provides expert witness accounts of tunneling mishaps worldwide for Clients, Contractors and Insurers; was Engineering Manager for Leighton Kumai JV construction of the Eagles Nest Highway Tunnels; and is providing Risk Management Services for the Kowloon Southern Link, the Singapore MRT Down Town Line and the Hong Kong MRT West Island Line.

Mr Thompson is an Associate Director with 18 years experience in most areas of geotechnical engineering. He has developed a wide knowledge of skills for the management of the design and construction of geotechnical works including the planning, feasibility studies, contract preparation and administration, project management, site quality, safety supervision, instrumentation and monitoring. He currently leads the team of engineers and specialists within Arup responsible for the design of the geotechnical works for all civil engineering and highway infrastructure projects for Arup in Hong Kong. He has developed a specialist knowledge for LNG Installations through his involvement with a number of proposed projects of this kind.

In recent years, he has project managed all of the LNG related business for the Arup Hong Kong office and is the local energy representative for the region. In addition he manages the geotechnical works for several large scale infrastructure projects both in Hong Kong and Overseas including several projects in Korea. Notable projects include the Route 8 Highway (between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan) and Stonecutters Bridge for Highways Department, the New Bangkok International Airport Railway, the Incheon 2nd Crossing in Korea and MRTA ISP North Contract in Thailand. The successful execution of these major government projects in Hong Kong has required a high level of technical understanding and a comprehensive appreciation of design procedures, contract administration, construction supervision, team building and financial control. Other major notable projects include the Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail Link Project (London), Bangkok Elevated Road and Train System (Thailand), several of the large buildings in Songdo New Town Korea, Canada Water Station on the Jubilee Line Extension (Contract No. 106, London), Joekngam– Yeongnam Bridge (Korea) and Thuan Phouc Bridge (Vietnam).

His design and management expertise has been developed through his involvement with these many fast track and technically challenging projects with considerable experience being gained in Design and Build Contracts where his planning and management skills were critical to their success. He has exceptional interpersonal skills, which are essential to the management operations of his dedicated team of staff and interaction with colleagues and clients for each of the numerous multi-disciplinary projects for which he has been involved.

Dr Yin’s experience covers a broad range of geotechnical works including deep basements and foundations for high rise buildings, tunnel modelling, slope and wall stability studies in Hong Kong and East Asia Pacific region. With over 15 years of challenging mega projects, Dr. Yin has established himself as one of the forefront leaders in the market today.

In recent years, Dr. Yin has moved on to focus on business development for the East Asia operation. He is currently the practice leader for Geotechnics business within the Infrastructure sector on the firm’s East Asia operational map. Within the region, his networks extend from Singapore to China.

Back in 1994, he was a member of a pioneering group of geotechnical engineers to design a 50-storey hotel tower on Shanghai’s soft alluvial deposits, and he personally supervised the piling and excavation stages of the development. His knowledge of difficult ground behaviour took him to various other mega projects including the current Hong Kong’s 102-storey International Commerce Centre.

Dr. Yin’s contribution to geotechnical works extend to what he described as ‘build-as-you-reclaimed’ methodology. The methodology focuses entirely on predicting the behaviour of ground in response to the demands of fast track developments. His notable key ‘build-as-you-reclaimed’ projects included KCRC West Rail Tsuen Wan West Station, Macau Sands Casino and the latest Venetian Cotai Strip developments.

Apart from his technical knowledge, Dr. Yin has also equipped himself with extensive experience on project management within mega projects.
